REFERENCE ITEM/CHOSEN FOOTWEAR
BRIEF 01: 1:1 SCALE SHOE
An exact replica (1:1 scale) of my chosen footwear was to be modelled, solely using triplex. All visible details on my chosen shoe (such as vent holes, lacing, etc.) were to be included. Accuracy, attention to detail and neatness of construction were imperative. The model was to be left unpainted/uncoloured. This was my first time doing something like this so the results of my first attempt were honestly poor, but I was able to give it another try and resubmit a couple of weeks later.
I now had proper experience working with triplex, considering that I had none in the beginning and especially considering that my second attempt at brief 1 was done after my completion of brief 2.
BRIEF 02: SHOE SECTION
For the second part of the project, a model of the chosen footwear had to made as if it were cut in half and the reason for this was so that the inside details of the shoe could be seen (in addition to those on the outside). Accuracy, attention to detail, neatness of construction, and the sole use of triplex were once again imperative, and the model was to be left unpainted/uncoloured. I learned how to use physical dimensions to build a model, to have an appreciation for internal spaces in products, how to work in various white cardboard media, and how to create a three-dimensional section through any given product/object.
BRIEF 03: SHOE MOULD
The final part of the project proved to be the trickiest to execute, as well as to explain. The best way it can be described is making the imprint the chosen footwear would leave if it were pressed into a brick of clay. The tooling block had to be approx. > 50mm than the overall size of part, i.e., it would represent the solid steel block from which one side of the mould would be cut. Accuracy, attention to detail, neatness of construction and the sole use of triplex were once again imperative (in addition to ability to learn from previous practice), and the model was to be left unpainted/uncoloured. I learned how to use physical dimensions to reverse engineer a model and an appreciation for tooling.
This was my first time working with triplex and it was also my first time making a model of something, so it was quite amazing to experience the highs and lows that came with this project.
